The Student-CBN Experience
By: CBN
The Canadian Brownfields Network is a proud host and partner with Toronto Metropolitan University’s student placement program. The placement program provides one student each semester an exciting opportunity to work and gain valuable experience with the organization. This program is co-led by our executive director, Tammy Lomas-Jylha, and our advisor and Professor at TMU, Christopher De Sousa and supported by our operations administrator, Helena Gomes. This program has hosted several students over the years and here is what they each have to say about the experience:
- Nun Nil, our placement student for the current Winter 2023 semester: “The experience has been wonderful so far. The work environment is dynamic and I’ve learned a lot about the field but I’ve also had the opportunity to develop other skills such as time management, task prioritization, and organization. I also found myself taking more initiative on tasks and being more efficient with my time. Tammy, Chris and Helena have been amazing angels over my head, I look forward to learning and honing my skills more!”
- Dorothy Yeung: “It has been a great educational experience to be exposed to so many different projects. The great thing about CBN is that it's not just one company and employees from that one company who have a similar working background working there. There are a bunch of different companies and different employees that you may interact with.”
- Mobeen Ghafari: “The opportunity allowed me to gain valuable experience in managing planning-related events. I gained experience in fulfilling different administrative duties such as sending and receiving emails, compiling information, coordinating with people in different positions, and providing updates to award nominees. As a result, I have been introduced to many different planning firms and the different brownfield-related projects that they have been working on."
- Mabel Mai: "It was an absolute pleasure to have worked with the Canadian Brownfields Network. During my time in the position, I was able to gain many valuable experiences and connections. It allowed me to grow as a young professional in a learning environment and helped me develop a strong work ethic which I continue to maintain. I am very grateful for the experiences the position has allowed me to gain and I am pleased to see the continued success of the organization. I highly recommend a placement position with the CBN for those who have a strong interest in brownfields in the future and I look forward to seeing what the future of the organization holds."
On behalf of the Canadian Brownfields Network, we want to thank our students for everything they have done to support our organization. We also want to thank our past-President, Christopher De Sousa, for continuing to organize this with Toronto Metropolitan University each year.
