De Sousa, Ridsdale Publish Research on Municipal Brownfield Work

By: Andrew Macklin

The Canadian Journal of Urban Research has published an article, An Examination of Municipal Efforts to Manage Brownfields Redevelopment in Ontario, Canada, written by two of our Board members, Dr. Chris De Sousa and Reanne Ridsdale.

As more communities look to embrace brownfield redevelopment as part of their strategic growth planning, researchers, practitioners, and developers question who is doing the heavy lifting in terms of creating and implementing brownfield policy. As brownfield policy was once a focus of federal government, now it appears that the municipalities have been left holding the bag.

This article presents the findings to the key question, what is the role of Ontario municipalities in managing and facilitating their local brownfield redevelopment? Results are based on data analysis of municipal policies across Ontario, an online survey of 43 municipalities, and six site visits to the municipalities with progressive brownfield programs.
